Gone Troppo

Hope this finds you all happy and well. Sorry this is a bit late but I am slowing down in my old age.
Well 2006 flew past so quick, I think I missed half of it. We spent Xmas 2005 at the Royal Langkawi Yacht Club with Walt and Jane from Callisto who we went around the Black Sea with in 2001. We then went to Phuket to catch up with Noel & Tina on Full Steam for New Year. Last saw them on Xmas Island 1999.  Anchored off Patong beach and tested the new bbq and watched the fire works quaffing Moe.

Checked out a few bays on west side of Phuket then went out to the Similan Islands, where we enjoyed some great snorkelling. After a month we cleared Thailand and slowly sailed back to Langkawi. We did this trip a few times over the year. We received a copy of a dear  friends book,(Mike rom MIKA)"Islands Oceans and Dreams" (Cruisingdreamspress.com)in which we get a mention, it is a great read. In February  Sue & Edie flew from China and joined us in Phuket for a couple of weeks. After they left we stopped at Ko Muk on our way down to Langkawi. It had a great bar on the beach where Mai Tai's and Pina Colada's came in pineapples and coconuts. Gail decided that we had to stay for a few days, so she organised an intro to scuba diving course for us. It was a great place to just kick back and relax before starting the boat projects scheduled for Langkawi. Gone Troppo now has new engine mounts, new cockpit hard cover, dodger,  shade structure over cockpit, interior vinyl, stereo, solar panels, #3 jib, dinghy, outboard, cushions and covers, light fittings, AIS, new 12v and 240v sockets, new bedroom fans, rewired new compass, new shelving in galley & navstation and a WorldSpace satellite radio. We also filled over 100 holes left over from old windows and embedded a few nuts to make it a bit more water proof. As an added bonus I found out that I can receive some weather charts, sat photos and forecasts over the WorldSpace radio. Here is a couple of links to these charts so you fellow cruisers can see what I mean.....Yes they come in full colour.

There is actually more weather and other documents than I could possibly read in a month.

Met up with Anne and Gary from Toucan Tango, last seen in Turkey in 2003, sure is a small world.
In June headed back to Phuket as Julie, Lyall and Nathan were flying from Alice Springs to join us for awhile. Sailed around Phang Na Bay and visited some hongs and James Bond island. Nathan put some protective film on the windows for us. Then back to Langkawi. In September Gail flew to KL, Johore, then to Singapore, Darwin and Adelaide. I got to catch up with Irene from Nyora and meet her daughter, son inlaw and two grandaughters. Had not seen her since 2001 near Istanbul. Gail returned in December with two grandsons, Thomas and Julian. So back to Phuket then Similans and back to Phuket for Xmas. Then went to Phi Phi Ley and onto Ko Muk to show the boys a hong, and to have a Pina Colada of course. Muk now have a swimming pool by the beach, so the boys had a great time in it with all the tourist kids from Scandinavian countries. Thomas met a nice girl who kept him fully occupied. Grandpa could sit at the bar and keep the bartenders busy and watch the boys at the same time. We then went to the Butangs and spent New Year there. Then back to Langkawi where we took a ride on the cable car, and the boys showed us how good at archery they were. The boys are now competent swimmers, snorkellors and grandpa tire-outers, and Julian is the champion UNO player. Gail and the boys flew back to Adelaide on 9/1/07, and hopefully(fingers crossed) Gail will be able to fly back to Phuket by the end of January. If she does we will then set sail for the Red Sea and the Med, if not we will have to take what comes and adapt the plans to suit.
Hope you all had a good 2006 and a better 2007. Hopefully we will meet up with you in the not too distant future.
